Choose the Right - The Hymn

Today was simple. Just teaching the words and meaning to the new song we are learning. And, I learned the Junior doesn't know the song at all but the Senior do. So....I'm gonna have to think of some reivew or other songs to teach them, which will be fine. Here's my flipchart for Choose the Right. Oh, but for some reason it's out of order in this format but I think you can figure it out! :) What a great song with a great message. Felt the spirit today while the kids where learning and singing it today. They really are learning how to choose the right. My son, 6, also prayed yesterday to make good choices. It warmed my heart.

"Choose the Right" Lyrics

So since they seem to know the song pretty well, we did Don't Forget the Lyrics or Choose the Right Lyrics. I had a volunteer come up to the front that thought they knew the song pretty well. So I had the primary start singing and then used the stop sign at a certain point and they had to try and continue the song. If they didn't know it they could use 1) A clue - I would turn over one of the flip chart sheets. 2) Help from the Audience or 3) You can choose from 3 phrases (i mixed up the words to see if they would remember the right one) It was quite fun! It's really a good way to see how well your primary knows the song. Next time, i'm going to do this and try it in class form to Really see how well they know it and where we need to work on the song. It was fun! The kids of course, are always great sports. We had some extra time though today because the stake came and I was trying to leave more time for them but things got switched right before so I had to be prepared with more ideas on the spot. I quickly got the cube out and sang a couple songs and then did the Hot/Cold Game. It's always fun and always a good learning experience.

Hullabaloo Cake Walk

So I was inspired the other day sitting at the computer trying to think of a fun activity, as always. And I looked over at our games, and saw the Hullabaloo mats. I had an idea to do a musical cake walk. The kids LOVED it!!! So, this is how it all played out.

We have still been practicing "As a Child of God" However, the kids in Senior have it down really well already. Go them!

I first  put up my laminated squares of "Fun Ways to Sing" on the board before it started and then covered it up sliding the board. So they weren't distracted with it before Singing Time.

Singing Time: For Junior, I called up helpers to hold up each page of the flip chart for the song and we sang it all together first.

Then we did the game. I put 6 mats on the floor and each had a number on it. (This could easily be done with just construction paper cut out) May not stand up as well with kids standing on it though :) Anyways, so then I had our wonderful pianist start playing the song and the kids walked in a circle until she stopped, when she stopped, I picked a number out of my bag. That number got to go the Fun Ways to Sing board and choose how to sing a verse of the song. Wow, we had plug your nose, stand on the chair, oink like a pig. but the very best one was KIDS ONLY! The Senior primary did awesome! I think I'm not going to sing more often because they really know it! It was an easy but fun day and good way to get the song in their head.

A Child of God - Choose the Right Words.

I taught the primary kids the new song last Sunday, As a Child of God. I got an idea from The Crazy Chorister
However, I adapted it a bit. I didn't want to find a bunch of items and print out pictueres I would never use again. So instead, I used wordstrips. The kids LOVED it. I really played it up with how silly the words were and the kids played right along.  In preparation, I wrote the song on the board and then put the words strips up in the blanks where they needed to Change the word and "Choose the Right" Word. On the other side of the board I had the word strips to the correct lyrics. Here's an example"

I came to MARS with the Power to MAKE COOKIES. Good Choices bless me me and my STUFFED ANIMAL TOO. As a SUPERHERO, I receive special light, the Holy Ghost helps me to know WHEN DINNER IS READY.... You can fill in your own words. but this idea could be used for any new song you are learning. I did realize that the V-Word should never be used in Senior Primary again. Wow, such laughing and talking and yellling out after I said Video Games. (I feel so SILLY and happy because such feelings of peace come from VIDEO GAMES.) X DANGER!!!! :)

I called up a volunteer from the sticks and they got to choose the right word that fit in its place. Kids liked it. And we sang it all through. Something I would different, would do the Fun Ways to Sing dice still because singing it over and over is necessary but having them sit or stand at different words or wiggling or clapping, would've made it more fun. I'm learning :)

Anyways, I'm slowly understanding the ropes and just realizing that the Opening and Closing songs need to be those that they've learned in the last couple years so it's continual review. Luckily or through the spirit, I happened to choose one of those last week. I do enjoy my calling a lot and I love being with these sweet children. I am really trying to learn all the kids names but it's hard but it's a goal of mine so I'll be working on that. If you have any suggesstions, let me know! I always ask when the volunteer just so it gets in my brain but i often forget!
